Inhalt: Sie haben Englischkenntnisse aus der Schulzeit und möchten diese wieder auffrischen? Sie haben länger nichts für ihr Englisch getan und möchten den Wiedereinstieg schaffen? Dann ist dieser Kurs das Richtige für Sie.

Der Brückenkurs "English pre-intermediate refresher" A2-B1 wird Sie an das B1 Niveau heranführen und Sie auf den Besuch weiterer Sprachkurse auf dem B1 Niveau vorbereiten. Im Kurs werden Kompetenzen in den Fertigkeiten Hören, Sprechen, Lesen und Schreiben vermittelt, grammatische Strukturen erlernt, Wortschatz systematisch erweitert und Vorkenntnisse vertieft. Ziel des Kurses ist es, häufig gebrauchte Ausdrücke zu verstehen und sich in routinemäßigen Situationen zu verständigen, wenn es um vertraute Dinge aus Uni, Arbeit, Freizeit usw. geht, sich einfach und zusammenhängend über vertraute Themen und persönliche Interessengebiete zu äußern und über Erfahrungen und Ereignisse zu berichten.

Zusätzlich zu den Unterrichtsstunden mit dem Dozenten besteht der Kurs aus obligatorischen E-Learning-Einheiten (ca. 30 Minuten pro Woche), die vom Kursleiter/von der Kursleiterin speziell für diesen Kurs erstellt und korrigiert werden.

Bei bestandener Klausur wird nach diesem Kurs das Niveau B1 des GER (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen) abgeschlossen. Die Klausur findet in der letzten Kursstunde in Präsenzform statt. Für Studierende, die ein offizielles UniCert-Zertifikat für das Niveau B1 erwerben möchten, findet im Februar zusätzlich eine mündliche Prüfung statt. Inhalt: In this course, you will learn to understand extended speech and lectures and to follow complex lines of argument regarding a familiar topic. You will practice reading articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems as well as literary prose. You will also learn how to write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of topics. You will improve your fluency, speech interaction and speech production skills by taking an active part in classroom discussions. You will learn to present and explain your points of view on a wide range of topics related to your field of interest. Grammatical points include expressing habits, modal auxiliary verbs, expressions with modal verbs, hypothesizing, articles, determiners, and demonstratives.

Presentation Skills in Social Sciences (B2/C1)

Der Kurs wird für fortgeschrittene BA-Studierende oder beginnende MA-Studierende empfohlen.

Requirements: This course is offered to students of the Department of Social Sciences who are studying a BA program as the major or MA program as part of the optional module. It is credited with 3 CPs. To attain these, students will need to attend regularly (minimum 80%), deliver a presentation and facilitate discussion. Students are expected to contribute actively to discussions in class and to complete preparatory work prior to coming to classes.

Objective: To build confidence in discussing discipline relevant topics by extending students’ vocabulary and equipping them with language and skills to deliver a presentation on those topics.

Description: The content of the course will be centred around several Social Science related topics and participants will have the opportunity to discuss each of these in depth and then give a presentation on an aspect of one of these topics. Articles, podcasts and short videos will be provided, which students will be expected to read, listen and watch, so that they can talk about them in class.

Within this framework, students will form small groups for their discussion and build on their vocabulary; apply phrases for asking for clarification, repetition, more information; and giving their opinion. Students will also learn language used in delivering a presentation and practise presentation skills such as transitioning between slides, describing a graph and fielding questions. Students will then give and receive feedback from both the instructor and peers on the presentations.

Academic Writing in Social Sciences (B2/C1) (B2/C1) (24 Stunden)

Der Kurs wird für fortgeschrittene BA-Studierende oder beginnende MA-Studierende empfohlen.

Objective: To equip participants with a transferrable writing toolkit to support and develop their academic writing skills; and to improve communication skills in a formal context.

Description: This course is aimed at students with a higher level of English and designed to assist them in polishing their academic writing. Therefore, it will not review the very basics of grammar but will build elements of academic writing such as crafting strong introductions, structuring paragraphs and presenting arguments clearly and succinctly. Participants will learn techniques for paraphrasing and practise summarising to avoid plagiarism; and use tools such as noun phrases, synonyms and connectors to achieve clarity and formality in their writing.

The course is interactive and practical, offering participants the opportunity to engage in in-depth conversation on topics relevant to the discipline of social and political sciences. We will differentiate between formal and informal English and when to employ the appropriate register, both in the spoken and written form. Accurate grammar will underpin our activities and there is flexibility in this course to address specific needs of the group should any issues be identified.

Assessment: There is no formal assessment for this course, however, to be awarded with the 3 credit points, students are required to: attend 80% of the course, prepare in advance of each session and complete two written assignments.
